Abstract:
Drawing data from a Hong Kong public opinion survey, this study examines Hong Kong's political culture in the post-National Security Law era. Specifically it includes topics of political fear, political identity, political trust, and modes of political participation. The findings suggest that while showing their obedience with their motherland on the surface, they are deeply distrustful of their mainland neighbors. Feeling abandoned by the British but unwilling to work with the PRC, they found comfort in identifying with traditional culture. In the meantime, political activism is hidden in the post-NSL era, but the risk of social protest remains high. There is a long way to go for China to integrate the post-colonial society into its own orbit, particularly in reforming Hong Kong's education, legal and media systems.
We look forward to your presence at this lecture.
